RSS leader Indresh Kumar says the organisation never involved in violence

by Shyamlal Yadav
New Delhi, February 20, 2011

CBI investigators questioned him in connection with several blast cases -- Samjhauta Express, Mecca Masjid, Ajmer Sharif and Malegaon. But Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) National Executive Member Indresh Kumar doesn't take too kindly to being called an accused. Now 62, Kumar became a RSS pracharak in 1970 after completing his mechanical engineering degree. He started a new RSS campaign, the Rashtravadi Muslim Manch, to connect with Muslims, an unusual step for an organisation known for advocating hatred of Muslims. But for the last three years, Kumar has been mired in controversy and is alleged to have had relations with the accused in those activities of 'Hindu Terrorism'. When India Today Associate Editor Shyamlal Yadav spoke to him at RSS headquarters at Delhi last week, he looked confident, not defensive. Excerpts:
Q. What do you have to say about Hindu Terrorism and Saffron Terrorism?
We should not relate terrorism with any colour, caste and religion. Terrorism was given birth by Pakistan and other Islamic countries and they term it as Jihad. Jihad is not meant for struggle, war or terror, but that was meant for betterment of society and self-purification. But I think to blackmail Muslim youth emotionally, they gave new term to terror as Jihad. That is why they term it as Islamic terrorism. Saffron is a symbol of sacrifice. It is a crime to relate it with terrorism. It is also wrong to say Hindu terror.
Q. Then is it right to say Muslim terrorists?
This word was given by them. It was not given by RSS-BJP.
Q. But RSS identifies itself with Hindus, I think that was the reason behind the word Hindu terrorism.
Hindus are everywhere. They are in the Congress also. Hindus are in Nepal, in the United States, they are in Mauritius. They are there across the whole world. Should we say all of them are terrorists?
Q. But has this issue not made the RSS defensive?
RSS is not defensive. We are doing our normal activities as usual. I have said it clearly that one gentleman is Colonel Purohit, other gentleman is Sudhakar Dwivedi alias Dayanand Pande alias Shankaracharya. Third gentleman is Dr RP Singh. Those three had formed Abhinav Bharat. Who are those gentlemen? It is written in Malegaon chargesheet that these people networked for the said activities but if at any stage they went to our shakha, this cannot be a reason to link RSS or its office-bearers to terrorist activities. This looks like a deliberate political conspiracy. How many people were accused for these activities? In Samjhauta and Mecca, they first accused SIMI (the banned Students Islamic Movement of India).
They accepted it in the narco test. Pakistan was made the second accused. Our Home Minister and External Affairs Minister gave proof of involvement of Pakistan on a number of occasions. US agencies are also investigating terrorism cases. They imposed ban on HuJI (Harkat-ul-Jehad-al-Islami) and Lashkar and the cases of Samjhauta and Mecca were mentioned as justification for the said ban. Then wife of Headley (David Coleman) confessed that her husband was behind these blasts. So there were four accused made so far. It is said Purohit and Dayanand Pande confessed that they were behind these blasts. But the investigation is being diverted to some other direction. Now, the sixth confession is of Aseemanand. Three years have already passed and I think that at any cost they want to implicate RSS or its office-bearers. Congress leaders are doing so by misusing some officials.
Q. If it is conspiracy against RSS and you, who is behind this conspiracy?
That is why I said that whatever information you got during investigations, you should file chargesheet. If the government has guts, it should constitute an independent inquiry commission. Media should also be allowed there. But by arresting somebody and by hiding what he said and by leaking selected parts of it, it is completely a conspiracy.
Q. Who is behind this conspiracy? The government? Some investigation agency? Or some particular people? Who are they?
This is a matter of investigation. That is why I say that they should constitute an independent inquiry commission. They should issue a white paper on it. They should file case in court. Whoever will be proved guilty, he will get punishment. But they are cooking up the stories. If CBI officers stand with the killers and leak the selected information then they have lost their moral, democratic and constitutional rights. Sarkaryawahji (RSS's Suresh Bhaiyaji Joshi) has written a letter to Prime Minister that the government should find out the background of Purohit, Dayanand Pande and RP Singh. The government itself has said that those people were willing to kill RSS top leaders. And the government has said in media trial that these people wanted to kill even Vice President Hamid Ansari. The question is that why the investigation agencies and government are silent on those findings? I think the truth is somewhere else and they are trying to change that truth.
Q. But who will benefit by implicating you?
They can tell it. Probably they will be thinking that by implicating RSS, they will appease some votebank. Even some foreign power may be behind this. That is why we are demanding an independent inquiry commission.
Q. Do you trust the ongoing investigations?
I have already said that they are cooking some story by misusing some officials of investigation agencies. My comment is clear in this regard.
Q. But you must have mentioned these reservations before the CBI investigators. What did you tell them?
Yes. I have told them. But we are neither investigation agency, nor we want to be that.
Q. But I am asking because they have talked to you?
According to WikiLeaks, Rahul Gandhi has said that he will see the rightists and he is doing so. Digvijay Singh has said that he has proof. It means that either they are running the investigation agencies, or influencing it. That is why I think that this all is a conspiracy.
Q. But if they had to implicate, why have they chosen only you? Why not your other colleagues?
I did not think much of this aspect. But some media has written that one reason behind this could be that I started the Rashtravadi Muslim Manch to connect Muslims with RSS. That was becoming successful in its just seven-eight years of existence.
Q. Did the RSS agree with you when you started Muslim Manch?
It was not my personal project. Muslims from different places were requesting our leaders for such campaign.
Q. How much were you associated with the people said to be involved in these blasts? After all, the question remains that why they chose to implicate you only.
If they (the investigators) select some names and they should ask them that how much they were associated with Colonel Purohit and Dayanand Pande. But they are only behind one name. I asked them that whether they are assigned to investigate the blast cases or they are assigned to implicate RSS leaders and Indresh. I think there was some government agency which was networking Abhinav Bharat with these people. This aspect must also be looked into.
Q. So the Abhinav Bharat people were never related to RSS?
Some of them may have been associated with the Congress also. Maybe some of them have been associated with RSS also. Government is repeating our name again and again and by doing so they gave clean chit to Pakistan. We are innocent and some Congress leaders from the government are torturing us. Whatever investigation is going on, it is a conspiracy. That is why I asked them that what job they were assigned to do.
Q. Who did you ask?
To investigators and to leaders. Through you also I want to ask this. I ask how can you say you were right at that time? How we can say that you are right now? They may say that time was a mistake. Now, I say they are committing a blunder.
Q. What lessons have you learnt personally and what lessons has the RSS learnt out of it?
The only lesson I learnt is that I had heard stories of people in power doing injustice. Now I am realising all these things.
Q. You did not learn a lesson that you must be conscious of the character of people (like Aseemanand) around you?
Till the truth comes out, it is too early to say anything.
Q. Isn't it true that some people in the RSS who are in favour of violence, leave it and start groups like Abhinav Bharat?
RSS has never taken the path of violence. But see their allegations. They said that we are associated with the ISI. I say that they are the agents of CIA.
Q. And they have also alleged that you took huge money from ISI.
No joke could be funnier than that. If this is an allegation of the government, it must come out with proof. I can only say that you may take the bio-data of Rahul Gandhi, Digvijay Singh, Manish Tewari and mine. Probably you will find more patriotism and social service in my bio-data.

Conspiracy exists to malign the image of RSS

Q&A: Manmohan Vaidya, the Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh of RSS

'Conspiracy exists to malign the image of RSS'
by Gyan Varma / New Delhi February 20, 2011

Manmohan Vaidya, the Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh of RSS, tells Gyan Varma that the investigative agencies are working under political pressure to defame the RSS

A senior member of the RSS, Indresh Kumar, has been named in the charge-sheet in the Ajmer blast case but he has not been made an accused. The Central Bureau of Investigation has also questioned him. Why do you think his name is coming up in all these cases?

Even after the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has openly said it will cooperate in investigations, names of senior RSS members are being taken by the media and some political leaders even before the investigations are complete. This is not fair. Though Indresh Kumar has not been made an accused in any case, the investigating agencies are asking about his link. The reasons they would know best.

Much before the Ajmer blast charge-sheet was submitted, a news channel showed a CD (in July 2010) claiming to have investigation details linking Indresh Kumar with terrorist acts. We think there is a deliberate attempt to malign him and the RSS. The selective leakage of investigation details to selected media smells of a conspiracy against the RSS. This is not just an investigation, there is something more to it.

Why is the RSS averse to the word 'saffron terror'? The word jehad has also been associated with terrorist activities by the same government.

Jehadi terrorism is a global phenomenon and the world is facing its heat. All the affected countries are now talking of mutual cooperation and coordination to fight against it. The people who are involved in these activities claim they are doing it in the name of jehad and jehad is supported by Islamic theology. There is no such philosophy in Hinduism that supports violence of any kind. The colour saffron is associated with our national and cultural identity. It is also part of our national flag. The saints and sanyasis of various religious orders in India wear saffron robes as a symbol of renunciation and are equally revered by people of all sects. Therefore, to use the term 'saffron terror' is absurd, baseless and completely wrong because no Hindu philosophy supports it. A few sporadic reactionary terror attempts have no similarity with jehadi terrorism.

You have often said there is a bigger conspiracy to defame the RSS and its members by making these allegations. Please explain who is behind these allegations?

The RSS has already said it will cooperate in investigations. But even before an investigation is complete, statements are made against the RSS. This hints at a conspiracy against the RSS to malign its image.

Maharashtra's ATS has intercepts of conversations of Colonel Purohit and Dayanand Pandey, the main accused in the Malegaon blast, telling that they had hatched a plot to kill Mohan Bhagwat, then Sarkaryavah of RSS and Indresh Kumar. They were heard spewing venom against the RSS and Vishwa Hindu Parishad in their conversations, which are in the custody of the police. The Maharashtra ATS has also revealed these conversations in the Malegaon blast charge-sheet. To say Sangh functionaries are involved in some terror acts with them is completely baseless and wrong.

No statements should be made until investigations are completed, charges framed and proved in court. Yet statements are being made and selective leakage of investigation information is being done to some sections of the media, compelling anybody to believe there is a conspiracy against the RSS.

The report of military intelligence published in a newspaper recently categorically said Colonel Purohit and Dayanand Pandey were involved in forming Abhinav Bharat and that they had also tried to contact and influence some workers of the RSS and the VHP to get involved in carrying out some terror acts. We want to know who is the brain behind all these attempts. In the letter of the Sarkaryavah of the RSS to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he has said Colonel Purohit tried to increase proximity with the RSS on the basis of his position and pro-Hindu views and tried to create divisions among the RSS cadre and like-minded organisations. We want to know why a serving military officer of his rank would do it? It seems there is a deeper conspiracy and that is why the RSS has demanded an independent inquiry to investigate this.

The RSS has often been accused of being a closed and secretive organisation. But now we see the Sarsanghchalak taking part in street protests and public functions more. Is it also part of the strategy to open up the RSS?

The RSS works in open fields and anybody can participate in its activities. To call this organisation 'closed and secretive' is laughable. We regularly have interaction with various people of our society. People of diverse thoughts and ideas are contacted and invited to participate in our programmes. How can it be closed or secretive? The RSS is involved in the work of character building and organising the entire society. We believe this work is a silent one. But being silent doesn't mean it is secretive. Yet whenever there is a need or false allegations against the RSS, we are compelled to come out to protest or to clarify.

Do you believe investigating agencies are not doing their job properly and are instead getting into political conspiracies and a witch hunt to defame the RSS?

It seems either the investigating agencies are not doing a fair job or they are not being allowed to carry out unbiased, fair and free investigations. Otherwise, the confidential confession of Swami Aseemanand would not have been leaked selectively to the media. The investigating agencies do not have evidence against the RSS but a Congress party general secretary was seen repeatedly saying he has evidence. We want to know why did the investigating agency give him evidence? How does he have the evidence? If he has it, then he should give it to the investigating agencies. Such statements suggest the investigating agencies are not being allowed to investigate impartially and properly.

This is the not the first time fingers are being pointed at the RSS. It has happened in the past too. Why do you think the RSS is under attack again?
History shows that whenever the ruling Congress party or the government has been in trouble, they have sharpened their attack on the RSS by making false and baseless allegations which could never be proved. At present, the Union government is surrounded by allegations of corruption, bad governance and its failure to curb a particular type of terrorism. The government is not taking decisive action against corruption and terrorism. That is the only reason the Union government is making these allegations to deflect people's attention.

The RSS has for the first time written to the Prime Minister and also sought an appointment with him. If you believe there is a political conspiracy against the RSS, then what makes you think these meetings will help?

Should we not expect just action from our Prime Minister Manmohan Singh? It is his responsibility as the PM to see that investigations are carried out fairly. There is ample evidence with the police that there was a plan to attack and kill senior members of the RSS. Yet the Maharashtra Police deposed in the High Court that they have taken a conscious decision not to investigate this further. How can the government allow the police not to investigate? It is a very serious issue. We expect that the Prime Minister should rise above political issues and differences and should work in favour of national interest.

Shri Guruji Golwalkar – Biography By H. V. Sheshadri

Shri Guruji

Sri Guruji Golwalkar

Who was Shri Guruji?

Let us look at the brief answers to these questions. Shri Guruji was the second all-Bharat Chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He was born in 1906. The special occasion round the corner is the celebration of his birth centenary. ‘Guruji’ was not his original name. This name was used out of regard, by his students in Banaras Hindu University where he taught. He is better known by this name even today throughout the Sangh and the nation. His name was Madhav Sadashivrao Golwalkar. His father’s name was Sadashivrao and his mother was Lakshmibai. They lived in Nagpur. In his childhood, Shri Guruji was called lovingly as Madhu. Eight progenies of his parents before him had met a premature death. Those days, Nagpur was a province of modern Madhya Pradesh. His father was a teacher. He was continuously posted in Hindi speaking areas. Although, his mother tongue was Marathi, since Hindi was the general spoken language, Madhu had a firm grip on Hindi as well. And as his school was managed by the Christian missionaries, Madhavrao (his name in school) developed mastery in English, too.
The atmosphere in Madhavrao’s house was pious and religious. Right from his childhood, his mother would wake him up with devotional songs, rendered in her melodious voice. This left a deep cultural imprint on him. He would cherish her songs very fondly, when he grew older.

Prodigious Intellectual Talent

Madhavrao was a sharp boy with prodigious memory. Once, his school teacher Prof. Gardener was teaching the Bible. Madhavrao interrupted saying, “Sir, the reference given by you is not correct, actually it should have been like this….” And saying thus he uttered another sentence. All the students and Prof. Gardener were amazed. But when it was cross-checked with the Bible, he was found to be correct. At the end of the class, the Professor gave him a fond pat on the back. This incident served as a witness to his qualities, like exceptional memory, courage and unshakeble self-confidence. His memory served him till his last day. Even today, throughout the country, people recall anecdotes of his phenomenal memory.

Extraordinary Forbearance

In 1924, having completed his studies up to Intermediate, Madhavrao left for the famous Banaras Hindu University, to finish his B.Sc. The huge repository of invaluable books in the library there was as if waiting to quench his thirst for knowledge. Madhavrao started reading the books, through and through, one by one. One day, his toe was bitten by a scorpion, but he very casually cut that portion of his foot, dipped that foot in potassium permanganate solution and resumed his study. Amazed at this, one of his friends asked, “How do you manage to study despite such severe pain?” Madhavrao replied, “Well, the scorpion has bitten my foot, not my head!” Later on also, people have many a time witnessed his tranquil tolerance under most excruciating physical pains.

Disciplinarian

Madhavrao returned to Nagpur after completing his Masters in Zoology with first class from Kashi and a few months later, left for Chennai for research in aquarium. There also, people experienced his passion for strict discipline. Once, the Nizam of Hyderabad paid a visit to the laboratory. All the visitors were charged with entrance fee. The managers, however, thought it inappropriate to ask for entrance fee from a big shot like the Nizam. But Madhavrao insisted and the Nizam could enter only after paying the entrance fee. In 1929, his father retired from service and this led to a financial crunch. Money could no longer be sent for pursuance of Madhavrao’s studies and ultimately, he left research work and returned to Nagpur. In his correspondence of those days, to his friends, Madhavrao expressed his sentiments as to how he felt in consonance about the incidents of the aggressive patriotism of revolutionaries.

Boundless Love for Students

From August 1931, Madhavrao began teaching at Banaras Hindu University. During this period, many of his hidden talents came to light. His unfathomable love for his students drove him to help them at studies in every possible way; often he would purchase the necessary text-books for needy students or financially assist them to pay their examination fees. He would be happy spending a large sum of his salary to this end. He would delve deep into other subjects also, so that he could help students in those subjects. Doing all this, Madhavarao had no expectation in return at all. Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya noticed his talent as well as his deep affection for the students, and grew fond of him. It was through a Swayamsevak from Nagpur, Shri Bhaiyyaji Dani, who was sent there as a student by Doctorji, (Dr. Hedgewar, the founder of RSS) that Shri Guruji came into contact with the Sangh. He also became the Palak (guardian) of that Shakha.

In February 1933, on the expiry of his teaching term, Shri Guruji returned to Nagpur and by 1935, completed his study of law.

What If The Family Tree does Not Branch Out Further?

Meanwhile, having seen Shri Guruji from closer quarters, Doctorji tried to maintain contact with him. Recognizing his extraordinary working capacity and intellectual talents, he started delegating greater responsibilities to him. In 1934, Shri Guruji ably discharged the duties of Sarvadhikari (officer-in-charge) of Sangh Shiksha Varga (Officer’s training camp) in Akola. By now, it was very natural for his parents to think of his marriage. Shri Guruji’s mother put forth the proposal for his marriage and said if he decided against marrying, their Golwalkar family lineage would cease to exist – he being the only surviving son. Shri Guruji replied, “In the present situation it is necessary, that, for the welfare of the society, if the family lineages of not only me, but several others like me are terminated, I am not in the least worried.” The debate over his marriage ended then and there.

In Search of his Life Mission

Shri Guruji was seriously thinking of orienting his life in a definite direction. The pathetic plight of the Hindu society and of an enslaved nation tortured him on the one side; on the other, it was his inborn spiritual pursuit that pulled him. He started visiting the President of Sri Ramakrishna Ashram, Swami Bhaskareshvarananda in Nagpur. There he came in close and friendly contact with Sri Amitabh Maharaj. He came to know through him that in the Sargachi Ashram, in Bengal, there stayed Swami Akhandananda, a direct disciple of revered Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa. In 1936, one fine day, based on the information received from Amitabh Maharaj, Shri Guruji quietly left for Sargachi in search of a spiritual guide. Neither his parents nor anybody else knew his whereabouts. When Shri Guruji left for Sargachi, Doctorji who was thinking about entrusting him with more and more responsibilities became equally concerned for him.

Unique Personification of Service

Sargachi witnessed another brilliant aspect of Shri Guruji’s personality. He immersed himself in the service of Swami Akhandananda, who was quite old and indisposed. Shri Guruji would daily bathe him, wash his clothes, offer him tea and meals, and put him to bed. Often Shri Guruji would sit through the night at his bed-side and serve him. About six months passed in this manner. His untiring dedicated service and his spiritual orientation pleased Swamiji so much that he decided to initiate him into the Order. Shri Guruji was overwhelmed after getting initiated. Later, he described the moment thus, “I have received the blessings one gets after innumerable births. My body felt thrilled all over and I am finding myself an altogether changed person.” 13th January, 1937 (Makar Sankranti) was the auspicious day of initiation. A few days later, on 24th January, Guru Maharaj gave his blessing to Shri Guruji, saying, “Whatever good I have, I am giving it to you; and whatever bad you have, you give it to me.” That day, till 3.30 a.m. Swamiji disclosed the secrets of spirituality to Shri Guruji and Amitabh Maharaj. One day, Swamiji told Amitabh Maharaj, “It seems that Golwalkar would work in association with Dr. Hedgewar.” As a mark of his memory, Swamiji gave his personal belongings like Kamandal etc. to Shri Guruji. After a short while, in February, 1937 the revered Swamiji left his mortal coil. Later, Shri Guruji spent some time in Ramakrishna Ashram, Belur Math and then along with Amitabh Maharaj returned to Nagpur.
In Nagpur, Shri Guruji’s, life took an altogether new turn. In Doctorji, he saw a personality intensely motivated and dedicated to the nation. On being asked by some gentleman on the subject, Shri Guruji replied, “Like spirituality, organization of the Nation has also been my inclination from early days. I believe that I would be in a better position to achieve it successfully being a part of the Sangh. Hence, I have dedicated myself to the activities of Sangh. In the light of the insight and practical approach of Swami Vivekananda, I think my decision is appropriate.”

Shri Guruji was also closely observing Doctorji, who had put his heart and soul into this work. From 1938 onwards, Shri Guruji identified the work of Sangh as the sole mission of his life. In the close company of Doctorji, he focussed his entire attention on the activities of Sangh. This also relieved Doctorji of his worries.

Vijay hi Vijay Hai

Unique Correspondence

Shri Guruji was engaged constantly in providing guidance to the Sangh and the nation in one way or the other. Along with it, he also remained regularly in close and extensive touch with various eminent personalities, organizations, well-wishers and Swayamsevaks through letters. The entire correspondence was carried on by himself and with some help from his assistant Dr. Abaji Thatte. The subject of his letters would naturally vary. Perhaps there is no other such personality except Mahatma Gandhi, who has written such copious and varied types of letters. Likewise, there is no leader who has constantly traveled to all the parts of the country twice every year, for thirty long years.

The Signs of Dusk

It was but natural that this superhuman efforts and hard work of Shri Guruji would finally take its toll on his health. By the time Shri Guruji turned 60, his health started deteriorating. In May 1970, a lump was noticed in his chest. It was diagnosed to be cancerous. Even then, he decided to get it treated only after his already scheduled tour of May and June was completed. On 1st July he was operated upon by Dr. Praful Desai at Tata Cancer hospital. Dr. Desai was then unacquainted with the activities of the Sangh. About Shri. Guruji, he wrote, “I was wondering how Shri Guruji would be able to take such an intense and long surgery at 65. But the calmness, courage and cooperation with which he went through the whole procedure, with the smile never leaving his face, it was amazing. He started walking around the very next day.” Shri Guruji asked the doctor as to how long would he live post operation. Getting his reply, Shri Guruji said “Wow! Very good! It means I have a lot of time. I have to work a lot!” Dr. Desai continued the regular check-ups. And soon Shri Guruji was back to his routine, writing letters, touring, meeting Swayamsevaks etc.

In the Thane Camp

Shri Guruji’s travels were on. By the end of 1971, he started feeling seriously unwell. He felt his end was nearing. He decided to have his last discussions with the prominent Swayamsevaks, as per the Hindu tradition. Accordingly, in the Tatvajnana Vidyapeeth at Thane in Maharashtra, run by honorable (now late) Pandurang Shastri Athawale ji, the programme was organized. Shri Guruji was present during the Abhyas Varg (study camp) of the prominent workers deployed in various activities aimed at narturing the true national spirit. There were suggestions that if the Sangh adopted the word “Bharatiya” instead of “Hindu” it would absolve it of the charge that it was communal. Shri Guruji presented the Hindu thought in its positive aspect and removed all the doubts on this issue with reasoning based on historic perspective and his personal experience. Along with this, he also discussed in depth other ideologies and did a comparative study of other belief systems and elaborately explained how the Hindu philosophy alone is capable of ensuring highest standard of welfare for the humanity and yield permanent happiness.

Ever-Victorious

Shri Guruji continued his travels even after the Thane Camp. On 4th February 1973, in Bangalore, he delivered a public address in fluent English, for one-long hour and that too, standing. None in the audience of thousands of Swayamsevaks and other citizens felt that he was about to leave this mortal world so soon. On 25th March, he delivered what was to be his last speech to the important workers from all over the country in Nagpur, on the occasion of Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha. The Swayamsevaks listening to him were wishing that he should finish his lecture soon as he had to struggle to speak every word. But even in this state of failing health, he spoke for 40 minutes. He said, “The single aim of all our different endeavors should be to make our nation stand high commanding worldwide respect for our country.” He emphasized, “Whatever be the atmosphere, tread on your path with this faith that the word ‘Hindu’ will be recognized all over one day.” And he concluded his speech saying, “Vijay hi vijay hai” (ever victorious)

Premonition

In Nagpur, in May, the Third Year Shiksha Varga of the Sangh was going on. It was impossible for Shri Guruji to make it to the Varga. Hence, in keeping with his strong urge it was arranged that Swayamsevaks province-wise were called into the Sangh karyalaya to meet him. There he got acquainted with them and emotionally appealed to them to carry on the Sangh work whole-heartedly and steadfast. The programme lasted from 16th to 25th May. Later even that could not be carried on. The Swayamsevaks from various parts of the country and other eminent personalities from all walks of life kept pouring in to the Sangh Karyalaya to enquire about his health. On the 3rd of June when the Sanchalika of Rashtra Sevika Samiti, respected Mausi Kelkar called upon him, he meaningfully said, “I am fully ready.” On the evening of 4th June, when the workers attending upon his came with a bottle of oil to give him massage, but it was empty. He jokingly said, “It’s over now! Good. Tomorrow, who will be there for massage?” On 5th June in the morning, he took his bath and meditated sitting on his usual seat. Later at 9.30 in the night, he breathed his last and his soul got liberated from the shackles of the mortal body.

The Moment of Inexpressible Grief

His body was kept at the front of Mahal Karyalaya in Nagpur. On the morning of 6th of June, grief-stricken people thronged the place. The three letters, written and sealed by Shri Guruji were opened and read. The Sanghachalak of Maharashtra province Shri. Babasaheb Bhide read the first letter wherein Shri Balasaheb Deoras was given the charge of Sarsanghachalak. The other two letters were read by Shri Balasaheb Deoras. In the second letter, Shri Guruji had indicated that it was not desirable that a memorial be erected for anyone other than that of the founder of the Sangh, Dr. Hedgewar. In the third, he had humbly written, “If I have ever knowingly or unknowingly caused hurt to anyone, to all of them I tender my apologies with folded hands.” This deeply moved the thousands of people who had gathered there who burst into tears. Shri Balasaheb himself felt choked. An Abhanga (composition) of Saint Tukaram was also mentioned in this letter, the meaning of which is -

O Saints! Please forward my last request
To the God that He might not forget me.
He knows everything; what may I say more.
Tukaram says his head placed on His feet
I may always remain under the shadow of His grace.

His body was given Mantra-agni (fire sanctified by sacred mantra) and cremated by the side of the Samadhi of Doctorji in Reshambag, (Nagpur) on a pyre made of sandalwood. The fire soon consumed his body, which like the sandalwood dissolved into the five elements. Later Bhagwadwaj was hoisted and the gathered thousands sang the prayer of the Sangh in grief-struck tones. And after the utterance of Bharat Mata Ki Jai all the Swayamsevaks returned home, with heavy hearts.

Now Reshambag is home to two great personalities in their chaitanya form Dr. Hedgewar sitting in the form of his image is on the upper floor of Smriti-Mandir and Shri Guruji, like the sage Dadhichi (who sacrificed his body for the welfare of gods and mankind.), as a smriti chinha (a symbolic memory). The statue of Dr. Hedgewar seems to be saying, “My selection was just right. Shri Guruji has spread the glory of the Sangh worldwide.”

Tributes by the Nation

Several saints and eminent personalities paid their homage to Shri Guruji. Acharya Vinoba Bhave said, “Shri Guruji was not in the least narrow-minded. He was always driven by the lofty ideals of national interests. He considered other religions like Christianity and Islam with due respect and always hoped that in Bharat nobody would be isolated.” The Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Puri said, “He was a saint, in white robes.” Jain Acharya Sushil Kumar Muniji said, “Shri Guruji was a giant of a man of our heritage.” Jain Sage Acharya Tulasi said, “He was endowed with the qualities of both a connoisseur and a thinker.” In the Parliament, President V.V. Giri, Speaker Mr. Gurdayal Singh Dhillon and other eminent personalities extolled the qualities of Shri Guruji at length. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi said in the Parliament, “We have lost in Guru Golwalkar a famous personality, who was not a Member of the Parliament. He held a respected position in the nation by the force of his personality and the intensity of his convictions.” Shri Shyam Nandan Mishra of the Congress said, “He was a great Karmayogi and Atmajnani.” Shri Samar Guha, a Socialist leader said, “He inspired the qualities of patriotism, dedication and service in thousands of youth of the country.” Another Socialist leader S.M. Joshi said, “Shri Guruji was a sage.” The leader of Akali Dal, Jathedaar Santosh Singh said, “He was a great man, the kinds who are immortals. The Sikh community has suffered a great loss.” Marxist Taki Rahman said, “Though I have never seen him but I have felt the power of his inspiration in those who have faith in the bright future of the country.” Congressman Shri Hatizuddin Qureshi said, “He was indeed a great man, He was not anti-Muslim. The Muslims have been misled that the Sangh is anti-Muslim.” Shri Jai Prakash Narayan said, “Shri Guruji was a spiritually great personality, who awakened thousand of youth to true nationalism.”

All the leading newspapers and journals shed light on the different aspects of the unique personality of Shri Guruji. The Sanchalika of the Rashtriya Sevika Samiti, Smt. Mausi Kelkar, and the leaders of Bharatiya Jansangh Shri Lal Krishna Advani and Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee amongst other eminent personalities also paid their homage to Shri Guruji.

Modern Bhagirath, Modern Ganga

In Conclusion, as a harbinger of a new nationhood, Shri Guruji infused a unique intrinsic power into the national life through his unmatched personality and actions. In the words of a senior worker of the Sangh, Shri Baburao Vaidya, “Bhagirath brought down the water of the heavenly Ganga to the earth by the power of his severe penance, and nourished and enriched the land of Bharat. In the same manner, Param Pujaniya Doctorji, brought the life stream of Param Pujaniya Guruji, who was on a spiritual path to Liberation (moksha), for the service of the people of Bharat. Thus, he (Dr. Hedgewar) carried to fulfillment the mission he had started to unite, organize and strengthen the Hindu society.”

"All of us came from the same ancestors:" Abdul Kalam

Speaking at a national seminar on 'Scientific Dating of Ancient Events before 2000 BC', at New Delhi on 30th July, 2011, Scientist and Former President of India Sri A P J Abdul Kalam said, "...all of us have come into this land from the same ancestors and roots".

On our scientific tradition …
"the bridge used by Rama to travel to Sri Lanka, is found submerged at the same location mentioned in Valmiki's writings, and as per estimates there has been a rise in the sea level during the last 7000 years roughly corresponding to 9 feet -- the same depth at which remains of Rama Sethu were found."

On his Janmabhoomi ...
"Rameswaram is known in intricate details to me as I travelled across the town delivering newspapers. In my eyes Gandhamanaparvatham appears from where Rama is supposed to have seen Sri Lanka. In front of me appears the famous Kothanda Ramar Temple of Rameshwaram. The central point is Ramanathaswamy Temple where we find the Siva linga which Lord Rama had worshipped."

Balasaheb Deoras and Indian Muslims - Muzaffar Hussain

The man who could persuade the Muslims to change their perception of Hindutva - Balasaheb Deoras & Indian Muslims

By Muzaffar Hussain

Publication Date : July 5, 1996

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has always been a subject of controversy for its perception of the Indian Muslim. It has been persistently dubbed communalist and describing its style of functioning as Fascist, no efforts are spared to bring it a bad name. Dr K.B.Hedgewar laid the foundation of the RSS in 1925 on the Vijyadashmi day for organising Hindus. Just because it primarily aims at protecting the interests of Hindus it is not logical to conclude that it poses a threat to non-Hindus. The RSS founder Dr. Hedgewar himself used to say that organinsing the Hindus was like weighing frogs in a balance. Hindus have a long tradition of social reformers and thinkers and Hedgewar can as well be regarded as a nucleus in the chain, because the number of his followers went on growing and the RSS work continued to expand. As the Sangh grew from strength to strength winning recognition in society its opponents also continued to make it a target of their criticism from time to time. It is not that the criticism came only from Muslims and Christians, a number of Hindu leaders themselves spared no pains to run down the Sangh in popular perception, besides religious heads and various organisers of people and social philosophers. As time passed all the allegations levelled against the RSS turned out to be baseless and hollow. But the charge of being anti-minorities continues to be repeated to date. All the three Sarsanghchalaks tried to refute the charge with their noble deeds and acts of service but the wily political operators would not let it be.

Dr. Hedgewar was deeply impressed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyaya's renowed world classic Anandmath. It should not be surprising if Doctorji had designed the RSS structure and its working by drawing inspiration from this classic. A writers hits at the establishment that gives rise to evil tendencies. It is but natural if the breaking up of Bengal in 1905 and the founding of the Muslim League in 1996 by the ruler of Dhaka had its impact on Bankim Babu. Anandmath not only sent out a singal of revolution but also elaborated how to go about it. Therefore when he returned to Nagpur he had Anandmath for his model when he set about forming the RSS. Bengal was then under Muslim rule. The British were trying to gobble up the rich area but the reigning Nawab was no match for them. Naturally opposition to the prevailing state of affairs cannot be construed as opposition to Muslims. Vande Mataram too is a gift from Anandmath. This is one reason why Muslims did not wholeheartedly accept Vande Mataram even though it was adopted as the national song by the Constituent Assembly. By 1925 the Khilafat movement had already had its impact. Thus in spite of being a staunch follower of Mahatma Gandhi Dr. Hedgewar felt that in this particular matter Gandhiji was not being fair to the Hindus. Accepting every demand of the Muslims was likely to later degenerate into political appeasement. Muslim could blackmail the Hindus to have their demands accepted. Hedgewar therefore stressed that the entire Indian population should be regarded as one. Gandhiji did not accept this position yet Doctorji continued to be his follower, actively participating in every one of his agitations. His was a historic contribution to the Nagpur session of the Congress.
Balasaheb Deoras

On the other hand although he sincerely believed in Gandhiji's creed of non-violence he had a nagging fear that after the country was independent or after the British quit what was the guarantee that a Taimur or a Babur, a Duplex or a Clove might not come marauding. He therefore wanted the Hindus to be militarity equipped to defend the Motherland in case of an eventuality. Dr. Hedgewar passed away in 1940.The events that followed were witnessed by Guruji Golwalker in his capacity as Sarsanghchalak. Partition, classification/categorisation of minorities in the Constitution and Gandhiji's assassination. The Congress party, particularly Jawaharlal Nehru, sought to implicate the RSS in the Gandhi murder case. They even appointed a commission to inquire into it. A through investigation was carried out. The charges made against the Sangh were refuted once by Sardar Patel and twice by Morarji Desai. But those indulging in politics of separatism by consolidating a vote-bank of Muslim votes with a view to monopolising power would not accept the truth and persisted in their obduracy. They constantly held before the Muslims the threat of their liquidation at the hands of those who did not spare even Gandhiji, So, if they want to live in India with guaranteed security they should vote for the Congress. In order to sustain this argument they engineered communal riots throughout the country at the smallest opportunity so that the Muslim live in perpetual fear and stick to the Congress. With every riot the charge would be repeated that the RSS was at the root of it. And the report of the occasional commission to investigate the riots would invariably absolve the RSS of any involvement. A number of reports categorically stated that the riots were started by the minority community. Meanwhile with its limited means the RSS too endeavoured to disabuse the Muslim mind of this unfounded fear. Whether there are floods in Assam or Gujarat, the havoc wrought by cyclones along the eastem coastline all the way from Calcutta to Madras or may be scarcity conditions in some part of the country the Sangh would be the first to arrive at the sight of the calamity to render all possible relief. The RSS volunteers of course serve all irrespective of religion, sect, language, creed or caste. As result the Muslims had first-hand experience of what the Sangh is and what it can do. This dispelled their fears and the preconceived view that the Sangh was their enemy. At the time of the Machchhu dam burst in Morvi (Gujarat) the RSS volunters helped the Muslims without any reservations and then for the first time the press too had to editorially acknowledge the bitter truth that the old canard against the Sangh was nothing but malice.

The delusion and the imaginary terror resulting in perpectual political enmity continued for a long time. The Sangh for its part remained charateristically quiet and went on with its mission with a firm resolve and full faith in itself. In 1973 the leadership of the RSS devolved upon Balasaheb Deoras. In 1967 the Congress suffered its first electoral reverse and the RSS role in the 1971 war answered most of the doubts of its detractors. During the 1962 India China war the Sangh had rendered signal service to the armed force all along the strife torn area from Bomadila to the interior parts of Arunachal Pradesh, which has been duly acknowledged by several Generals, including Gen. Thimayya in their respective works. Gen. Jacob the them C-in-C of the Eastern Command proudly mentions in his speeches that the Army received its first congratulatory message after their conquest of Dhaka from the RSS.

Indian politics experienced its first internal upheaval with the declaration of the Emergency in June 1975. This was the second time to RSS was banned during Deoras's career and the first for him to face in his capacity as the Sarsanghchalak. The whole of India was turned into a veritable jail. I need not repeat what the Sangh had to go through. Balasaheb however gave it a positive turn. While in jail he had the opportunity to react with the leaders and activists of many banned Muslim organisations including the Jamaat-e-Islami. As a result the two parties came closer not only in their thinking and responces but also in their day-to-day dealings. By their conduct the RSS adhikaris dispelled the Muslims' apprehension that the RSS was their enemy. It was the first miracle Balasaheb achieved by giving a positive turn to the Muslim perception of the Sangh. After being acquainted with the ideology of the RSS, hitherto dubbed a body of militant Hindus, leaders of the Jama'at-e-Islami came to conclusion that barring image-worship there was no fundamental difference in Islam and Sanatan Dharma. The jail during the Emergency became a turning point where the impasse between the two communities came to an end and paved the way for a dialogue. The change brought about two major gains. One, the Congress got a serve drubbing, two, there was an instant awakening among the country's masses. At this point Balasaheb realised
that the Sangh has to exercise responsibility also at the Government level. Just to teach a lesson to the Congress party he even agreed to merge his brain-child the Jana Sangh with the Janata Party. It cleared the misapprehension that the RSS was a die-hard inflexible body which will never countenance a compromise. Aver the Meenakshipuram incident the Shankaracharyas had to come out of the temples and mix with the people, Imaam Abdulah Bukhari of Delhi's Jama Masjid was already in thick of a popular uprising. The performance of Atal Behari Vajpayee as the Minister for External Affairs and L.K.Advani as the Minister for Information and Broadcasting demonstrated to the Muslim people that the RSS swayamevaks would not say one thing and do something else. In the 80s and the 90s several States had BJP Governments or BJP as a coalition parther. These States remained free from comunal riots and further strenghened the Muslims' faith that the RSS is never responsible for Hindu-Muslim riots. The Meenakshipuram incident thoroughly shook the nationalist Muslim and those who worked for harmony. They were displeased with the mischief. Like the Shah Bano case which moved the enlightened muslims to think afresh on their personal law in the context on their personal law in the context of the changed circumstances of the modern age, the Meenakshipuram incident too initiated the Muslims to realise that such activities do not help in putting into practice principle of co-existence. This kind of opening of the minds began with the coming of Balasaheb.

Some Muslims had gone to the RSS central office in Nagpur for discussion in the course of which it was time of offer namaz for which they sought leave. Balasaheb asked them if they could not offer namaz in the RSS office. Why not, said the Muslims visitors. Balasaheb then prompty had arrangements made in the office for the guests to offer namaz and for wuzoo the ceremonial washing of hands and feet prepratory to offering namaz. Presently the RSS office resounded with azan, the call to the faithful to pray. The Muslims wondered at the RSS doing all this. Balasaheb however found nothing novel or surprising about it. He believed that the day both the communities rid themselves of mutal misgivings and mistrust most of the country's problems would be solved. Saints bind the people together, Governments and politics rend them asunder. This liberal attitude of the Sangh was openly appreciated by the press. Rarely there appears in the world a historic figure who actually translates his words into deeds.
As of now there are countless Muslim boys attending the shakka, some of whom are even office bearers like gata pramukh (group leaders) or mukhya shikshak (chief instructor.) The boys never feel that the shakha has two different sets of people, namely, Muslims and Hindus. On December 31 last year Mangalore held a special rally of some 1.5 lakh people among which 68 Muslim youth attended it in their capacity as swayamsevaks. It indeed was a unique feature of the grand function.

Balasaheb's concept of Hindutva has greatly influenced the Muslim perception. It has utterly non-plussed the currently fashionable expression ``secular''. The concept of cultural nationalism as propounded by Deoras is not at all unpalatable either to those who subscribe to Dr Iqbal's ideology or those who believe in the philosophy of the erudite Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. By the sheer force of his liberal attitude this great thinker has shaken the foundations of bigotry and obscuratism, replacing it with the truest from of nationalism which can only be described as Hindusthaniyat.
